The average American upgrades his or her phone once every 18 months. While some people donate or recycle their old cell phones, many more simply throw them in the trash. According to some experts, as many as 150 million mobile phones will be thrown out by Americans this year alone. These discarded phones often end up in a landfill, where toxic chemicals can seep out of the phone and into the soil and water. To reduce this pollution, numerous environmental groups are offering programs which allow people to recycle their used cell phones. The used cell phones are often refurbished and donated to worthy causes or resold to people in other countries.
